Welcome back to Bengals On The Brain, presented by First Star Logistics! In this episode, we're diving deep into the film room to evaluate Jalon Walker, a fascinating prospect for the Cincinnati Bengals in the upcoming NFL Draft. Walker is a linebacker and edge rusher from the University of Georgia.

Before we start, I want to express my gratitude to our partners at First Star Logistics. Their support makes this content possible.

We are here to examine a draft pick in the 17th range on the Consensus Big Board. This episode focuses on the defensive end/edge position but with a twist. Jalon Walker presents a unique challenge for evaluators because his role at Georgia blurred the lines between linebacker and defensive end. He is consistently in the range of pick 17 of the big board.

Currently listed as an Outside Linebacker, but he's a guy who gets sack production and rushes the passer all the time. We've seen multiple games where he gets 20 pass rush opportunities.

Can he transition into a true edge rusher in the NFL, or is he destined to be a versatile linebacker who can contribute as a pass rusher in specific packages?

That's the question we're trying to answer today.

Traditionally, the Bengals like bigger defensive ends, but what would you do if you got the chance to have a Micah Parsons-type linebacker, pass rusher, or edge rusher? Then, you look at watching Nolan Smith in the entire Playoffs to see if you got something. In this film breakdown, we'll dissect Walker's strengths and weaknesses based on his game film against the Texas Longhorns (two games) and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

What You'll See in This Breakdown: Comprehensive Game Film Review: We're not relying on highlight reels. We're watching full game footage to get a realistic understanding of Walker's performance in various situations. This is my first time watching him as well.

Pass-Rushing Analysis: We examine his technique, speed, power, and hand usage as a pass rusher. Does he have a go-to move? Would he be able to win consistently against quality offensive tackles? How does he react to chip blocks and double teams?

Run Defense Evaluation: Is Walker disciplined in setting the edge? Can he shed blocks and make tackles in the run game? Does he have the size and strength to hold up against bigger offensive linemen?

Coverage Skills: We analyze his ability to drop into coverage, read quarterbacks, and make plays on the ball. This aspect of his game could be valuable in a league that increasingly values versatile defenders.

Athleticism and Versatility: We assess his overall athleticism, including his speed, agility, explosiveness, and change-of-direction ability. How does he move in space? Can he handle different roles within a defensive scheme?

Comparing to Other Prospects & NFL Players: We draw comparisons to similar players in this draft class and current NFL stars to provide context for Walker's potential. We will talk about Zack Baun as a pass rusher who was a linebacker, or even Cooper De Jean. Even Derwin James, coming out as a "tweener" took a bit of vision.
