In September 1939, the German submarine U-30 attacked the British passenger ship SS Athenia, marking the beginning of a prolonged conflict between German U-boats and Allied convoys. Both sides relied heavily on intelligence and technology to gain an advantage in this intense maritime battle. By early 1943, advancements in Allied technology and tactics, such as anti-submarine measures and convoy rerouting, began reducing U-boat effectiveness. The Allies achieved a crucial advantage, significantly decreasing U-boat attacks on convoys. The kamikaze attacks posed a unique threat to U.S. naval forces, but despite heavy losses, the Allies ultimately gained control, marking a strategic victory in the Pacific campaign.
