At the Southwestern corner of California there is a binational friendship park that has been called the unfriendliest friendship park in the world. Once a place where people from two countries could get together, now it is a heavily guarded place with multiple tall border walls and raw sewage contaminating the surrounding area.
Border Field State Park was created in 1971 as part of Richard Nixon's legacy of parks and in the southwest corner where California meets the Pacific Ocean and Mexico, the Friendship Park was created. For decades it was a meeting place for citizens of the United States and Mexico, but slowly the park became more and more off limits. For years it was only open for one day a month, but since 2019 it was been closed completely and bulldozed.
While the park, and the SW corner of California are completely inaccessible now, across the border in Tijuana, Mexico the Friendship Park lives on.
In this video we explore the Tijuana River Estuary in Imperial Beach to see where the heavily polluted Tijuana River reaches the Pacific Ocean, the entrance to the closed and off limits Border Field State Park, and the Friendship Park and a number of monuments in Tijuana, Mexico as we view the southwest Corner of California and the northwest Corner of Mexico.
