Our bifurcated garments go by many names- trousers, pants, drawers, bloomers, pantaloons, trunks, hose, etc. But the battle of pants vs trousers took off in the mid 19th century. So let's jump back to look at the possible origins of both of these terms and how we've changed our perception of them over the last few centuries! Along the way we'll find bad jokes, political mistakes, and cries for battle. The absurdity that is the story of "pants" is truly worthy of a Muppets retelling.
The journey to get to "a pair of pants" (as is said in America), rather than "trews" is hundreds of years. Why "a pair"? And how did we get such a silly sounding word as Pantaloons? Well, it certainly sounds silly to our modern ears. Decades of time have relegated Pantaloons and Bloomers to historically mythological undergarments (much like Pants has become for the English). But did those terms actually apply to frilly underwear in the 19th century? Needless to say, the transition in terminology was not a smooth one. Turns out just getting Pants in the dictionary was a fight! Honestly, the only thing I'm missing so far is a Punch cartoon and an epic poem to complete the Victorian drama set.
With all of this, it hardly seems like Gonzos choice of wool plaid is the gaudiest part of this garment. And in reality, his style choices are fairly mundane. Fly front, pleated waist, and straight hems. No stirrups, narrow fall fronts, or extreme flare legs. Quite the typical Victorian gentleman walking down the streets of London. Except for the nose maybe.
