One of the most peculiar things in all of sports are soccer teams playing domestic leagues outside their own borders. That’s because the entire soccer pyramid in most countries is based on location.
You start at the very bottom with hyper-local leagues, eventually working your way up to city, state/provincial, regional, and eventually national leagues. At this stage, the very best of the best get to experience life outside their borders via confederation-based competitions like the Champions League or Copa Sudamericana.
It all makes sense when you think about it. However, there are certain clubs out there who, for various reasons, do not abide by these rules and play in a domestic league that isn’t based in their home country.
This is a trend that spans the world. There are some usual suspects such as New Zealand sides in the A League and Canada's infiltration of the MLS. European clubs are also border hoppers while the UK is a bit of a mess.
