"The Whispering Deep" by Tamlan Dipper / Cthulhu Mythos "The Whispering Deep" is a 2024 Cthulhu Mythos story by the British writer, Tamlan Dipper. The story, which takes place during the height of the Second World War, concerns the Women's Royal Navy Service—the Wrens—and their efforts to crack a mysterious code referred to as Silent Strutter. You are unlikely to find a more accurate and spirited account of naval history including Midway and the Guadalcanal campaign. Please say hello from me. Regarding the use of swearing, the audience may be interested to know that the first recorded use of the word ‘fuck’ to mean mistreated that I found dates to legal papers from 1866. General usage of the word predates the founding of the Royal Navy which to me feels rather egg and chicken. The story about Sir Charles Napier using the message ‘peccavi’ is apocryphal. But it seemed the most likely analogy for Professor Clark to believe in and try to teach. If you go to the Oxford Natural History Museum – and I urge you to do so immediately – you will see Eustreptospondylus in a flat stance with their head more in line with their tail. But in the 1940s they were believed to stand more erect. Dr Marek Okranta is of course a nod to Marc Okrand. Real life inventor of both Klingon and Atlantean languages for film and television. The General Post Office (GPO) engineers mentioned in October 1942 are a nod to the real life Tommy Flowers. Tommy Flowers made great strides in creating an electronic ‘computer’ and use of magnetised tape; advances that were cheerfully ignored by the British government after the war, and buried in secrecy. Chief Bates does not use his name in the text as it was standard practice to not share names between teams at Bletchley, as a security measure. The ‘Robinson’ is any complex machine, so named after Heath Robinson’s cartoon inventions; a term sometimes applied to the analytical machines at Bletchley. Dr Sledge at the end of the piece is a nod to Dr Justin Sledge of the Esoterica channel, also here on YouTube. Although I had studied the Enochian script of John Dee, and his supposed correspondence with angels before, Dr Sledge’s sober and scholarly analysis is how I finally understood it. He has, among other things, created a video specifically looking at the occult foundations of Lovecraft’s writing. He also has some amazing alchemical death metal merch'. Last but not least, I am indebted to Women In Cryptography (WinC) for their advice on understanding the methods and the motivations of the characters. Although any errors or omissions are entirely my own. Their comment follows: "Designing, analyzing and securely deploying codes & cryptography continues to be an extremely relevant task. It requires the effort of many people, coming from various backgrounds with different expertise and experiences. Building a diverse community, in particular (re-) integrating women to cryptography, is one of the main goals at Women in Cryptography. Our message is clear: you are welcome and you matter.
