The “Long Winter,” as it was also known, brought an onslaught of blizzards, winter storms, and blowing snow events to the upper Midwest. The first blizzard struck in mid-October, catching all the settlers unprepared. The final event occurred in early April, making it a 6 month stretch of seemingly endless storms. Several people died of exposure, cattle and poultry perished, and people in general suffered from a lack of food and fuel. A settlement of Connemara people were hit particularly hard, not having the knowledge or strength to battle a severe winter in Minnesota.
