The tragic story of pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in the First World War, motivated many composers to start writing new music for him. Wittgenstein's old mentor Josef Labor took the lead with no fewer than 11 works. The utterly romantic Trio for clarinet, viola and piano left hand dates from 1919. It was only premiered in 1932, to immediately fall into oblivion. Folke Nauta rediscovered the manuscript in Austrian archives, so now we can experience a first performance in more than 88 years!
March 2024
Folke Nauta passed away unexpectedly and prematurely in the summer of 2023.
The albums Left Hand Legacy Vol. 1 and 2, released by Cobra Records, contain the last recordings made as part of the Wittgenstein Project with Folke Nauta as pianist. Vol. 2 is dedicated to his memory.
The concert series continues with the young Ukrainian pianist Antonii Baryshevskyi.
