All aboard the Ella Odyssey which might just be the best train ride in the whole world! Our journey started very early in Sri Lanka's capital city, Colombo at the Fort Train Station where we boarded the Ella Odyssey train.

We did the full train journey from Colombo to Ella even though most people board the Ella Odyssey from Kandy to Ella. Stating from the city of Colombo allows you to board in a much more relax environment and enjoy the first part of the journey from Colombo to Kandy almost completely alone. The sceneries along the way to Kandy are also well worth the extra time.
Upon arrival at the Kandy train station, this is when most tourist jump onboard this Sri Lankan train. The portion of the Journey from Kandy to Ella is by far the most popular with its mountains, waterfalls and tea fields. What makes the journey even more special, especially for tourist is the fact that all doors and windows are open during the train ride. I'm sure you have seen the photos in the past if you are planning a trip to Sri Lankan as this Sri Lanka train is one of the most popular thing to do for tourists.
How to book the Ella Odyssey train tickets? I wish there was an easy answer both realistically you can book up to 3 months in advance IF you are in the country or have a Sri Lankan phone number. Otherwise, it can be done 1 months in advance but most of the time, the reserved seats tickets are already booked as many Sri Lankan tour agents book them all to resell to tourist at a much higher price.
But according to our experience, no matter if you can get this train ticket for a few dollars or at the travel agent price, it is still well worth the adventure!
