Interview with the 110-year-old Yaqui sage Tata Kachora, who is said to be the real Don Juan Matus from the books by Carlos Castaneda.
In the early 1960s, Carlos Castaneda, a Peruvian writer and anthropologist, traveled to northern Mexico. There, at the bus station of a border town, he said he had met Don Juan Matus, a witch who took him on as an apprentice and initiated him into the secrets of psychotropic medicinal plants, thus having a series of experiences and learnings recounted throughout 13 books.
The books were a total success: they sold more than 27 million copies and were translated into 17 languages. Such was the influence that George Lucas has stated on several occasions that for Yoda he was inspired by the wisdom of don Juan Matus, that is, by the person I had before me now.
Tata Kachora claimed that his writings, in which he recounted his knowledge and personal stories, were stolen and that, since then, he decided to change the way he wrote.
Experts point out that Castaneda wrote works of fiction based on encounters with more than a dozen indigenous scholars, of whom Tata Kachora seems to have been the main one. The author, however, never spoke about it and died keeping both the secret and several million in his account.
