Coming up, Simple Man was a track on one of the greatest debut albums of the rock era, Lynyrd Skynyrd's (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd). And it’s been streamed over a billion times and is one of the most beloved songs of rock’s most storied genres. But despite its popularity, Simple Man never actually charted on the Hot 100. The only reason it wasn’t a hit is that the band failed to release it as a single. But that finally charted decades later. Funny story: Apparently, Skynyrd’s producer didn’t want them to record the song. He put his foot down and denied them. But the guys got together and hatched a plan; they coaxed him outside and then locked him out of the studio... and told him not to come back until they were done. At the time, Lynyrd Skynyrd and their producer were at each other’s throats all the time. But somehow, despite the constant fighting, they managed to put together a historic debut album. And Simple Man is some of the best advice for a happy life as it came from several of the band members' loved ones... to be precise their grandma and mother. It’s the story of a tear-jerker from one of rock’s toughest frontmen next on Professor of Rock. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers David Roche, Bob Bell, Holly, W.T.F, James Dorsey, Bruce Suit ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out my Hand Picked Selection Below Professor's Store - Van Halen OU812 Vinyl Album https://amzn.to/3tLsII2 - The 80s Collection https://amzn.to/3mAekOq - 100 Best Selling Albums https://amzn.to/3h3qZX9 - Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie https://amzn.to/3ifjdKQ - 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art https://amzn.to/2QXzmIX - Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon https://amzn.to/3h4ilrk - Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) https://amzn.to/2ZcTlIl ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store -http://bit.ly/ProfessorMerch ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out Patron Benefits http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed Southern Rock bands of all time. Coming at you with a distinctive triple-threat lead guitar sound, their signature songs have become essential entries in the American rock canon. Both ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and ‘Free Bird’ are irreplaceable anthems. that we’ve already covered on her. But while those two songs may be their biggest hits, this long-tenured band’s catalog runs so much deeper… Today, we’re getting into another mega-hit that, although never released as a single, has captured the heart and soul of listeners for decades. That song is Simple Man. Let’s go back to the summer of 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida. That’s when and where founding members Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Bob Burns met as teenagers… while playing on rival baseball teams. When they discovered they all had a common desire to play music, they put together an impromptu jam session in the carport of Burns’s family home. That performance then inspired them to form a band. Van Zant would take vocals, Rossington guitar, and Burns drums. From there, the lineup would grow and evolve over the years. But Allen Collins on guitar and Larry Jungstrom on bass were the next to join. The young group would go through years' worth of band names, trying to find the right one. At different points, they called themselves ‘My Backyard’, ‘The Noble Five’, ‘Wildcats’, and ‘The One Percent’. In 1970, the group started calling itself ‘Leonard Skinnerd’, which was something of a backhanded compliment to the group’s former gym teacher, Leonard Skinner.
