Imagine touching a live wire while your body makes contact with the ground. Without a GFCI, this would be fatal. But how exactly does this device protect you? That’s what I’ll cover today. Chapter 1: Misconceptions Many people believe that a circuit breaker will protect you from electrocution. It won’t. Circuit breakers prevent overloads and short circuits, not the flow of electricity through your body. Plus, the myth that electricity always takes the path of least resistance? Also wrong. Electricity flows through all available paths, which could include your body. Chapter 2: Current Through Your Body Using Ohm's Law, we’ll calculate how much current would flow through a person if they touched a live wire. Even small currents can be deadly, and I’ll show you just how dangerous even 50 milliamps can be. Chapter 3: What is a GFCI and How Does It Work? A GFCI protects you by comparing the current going to and from a device. If there’s a difference, meaning some current is flowing into the ground (possibly through you), it cuts off the power within milliseconds. This simple device can prevent fatal shocks in wet environments like bathrooms and outdoor outlets. I’ll share a personal story of how a GFCI saved my life. Chapter 4: IT vs. TT Systems I’ll explain the difference between IT (isolated-earth) and TT (grounded-earth) electrical systems. While IT systems may seem safer, they’re more complex and expensive to maintain. For residential and off-grid setups, TT systems are more practical but require GFCIs for protection against faults. Chapter 5: Installing a GFCI in Your Off-Grid System Finally, I’ll show you step-by-step how to install a GFCI in your off-grid system, highlighting the importance of a ground-neutral bond for proper functionality. I’ll even demonstrate what happens when this bond is missing and how it affects the GFCI’s ability to protect you. Make sure to check out my other videos on ground-neutral bonding and grounding your system for a complete understanding.
