“Rise and shine, Mr. Vela!”
The sudden voice surprised James, waking him up from unconsciousness. His thoughts were still foggy as a splitting pain wreaked havoc within his head.
As he gathered his thoughts, he realized a couple things: First of all, his body hurt. A lot. Secondly, he didn’t know where the hell he was. But perhaps the biggest question he had was:
“Didn’t I just die?”
His eyesight finally focused, letting him look around. He seemed to be in an office of some sorts, with documents haphazardly left about. A horned man sat across from him with papers in hand. James assumed this was the man who woke him up.
“Ah, Mr. Vela! I’m happy to see you’ve decided to join us in the realm of the living!” A small pause, “Get it?”
James looked back stoically.
A small frown befell onto the devil. “I guess not everyone enjoys that type of humor after dying, huh? In any case, I’m sure you’re wondering where you are and what’s going on.”
James nods.
“Well, welcome to hell! As I’m sure you’ve realized, you died not too long ago. And it seems you were sent here for… 17 murders. Does that sound correct to you?”
“…Yes.” James finally speaks, his voice hoarse.
“Well, Mr. Vela. It seems the committee has found your case to be quite the interesting one. Given your motivations and the people you targeted, we felt that you would be the perfect candidate for one of the positions that has recently opened up here in Hell. A position that would allow you to properly punish the bastards deserving of it.”
He pauses, takes a sip of his coffee, and continues. “So, what do you think? Are you interested?”
James stares at Lucifer. Needless to say, this was a lot of information to process, and this seemed to create more questions than answers. Despite that, however, this offer probed James’s interest.
“I’m interested.”
“No hesitation, I like that. Great.” The devil smiled, “Let’s get you into some comfortable clothes, and we can go over the specifics from there.”
