Understanding how geometrical patterns work on guitar is a fundamental skill. Nearly all of the shapes we use for chords and scales repeat their design, so learning this is essential. In today’s lesson a 2nd position “Bm” chord will be used as a template to connect a series of 2-note chords along the neck.
The chord template concept for guitar is excellent because of how it establishes a direct connection between chords. This lesson takes a “Bm” barre chord template at 2nd position up to the 7th position to establish an “Em” chord.
Both chord templates share an identical fret layout and they both share the same connection to harmony. The two chord layouts may also be combined for composing great riffs that are easy to do, sound fantastic and are a lot of fun.
The “Bm” chord in this lesson (along with its dyad harmony shape) can shift to “Em” chord with the exact same geometrical layout. This means that any riff or lick created off of one chord can also connect to the other chord. The result is a uniform pattern for chords, riffs and licks that travel across the guitar neck.
Today we are going to explore this idea using a “Bm” barre chord connected to an “Em.” They will both link up to a series of dyads along the 3rd & 2nd strings. This principle is easy to do and this lesson teaches all of the theory. At the end of the lesson I’ve included an example riff that applies everything.
