While Joppan's (Mammootty) friends take a bath, each of them narrates the flashback of Joppan, that he was an adept Kabbadi player, and during their informal victory parade along the knolls, he fell for Annie's Andrea Jeremiah beauty. Annie, an Estate Supervisor's daughter did not reciprocate to Joppan's feelings. But Joppan attained her love by saving her younger brother's life. Their love became the talk of the town and Joppan's father reprimanded him. Joppan renounces his family and native, except Annie and assures that he will return for her after becoming an affluent man. In the course of time Annie grows into a nubile woman. Abruptly Annie's father expires and Annie was taken to Mettupalayam by her kindred. Joppan returns to town and meet his friends. The Mercedes Benz and the cash case are the proof of his affluent status. He asks for Annie and helplessly witnesses her marriage. Broken, he finds relief in alcohol. The friends finishes the flashback and takes a final dip in the lake. Joppan brings back his Kabbadi team and win manifold trophies. Joppan and his friends spend time by watching DDLJ for innumerable times and by gulping brewing arracks and evening toddies. The Vicar, marriage broker, Joppan's mother and friends compel him for bride-seeing. He at last consents but sees a girl wet with newfangled ideologies. Later on the purlieus of the Parish, amidst the downpour, Maria Mamta Mohandas sneaks into Joppan's umbrella and later witnesses his street duel with a law enforcement officer which boiled an impression in Maria. Later Joppan and Maria coincidentally meets each other in different ways. Joppan discovers qualities of Annie in Maria and falls for her. But fate becomes cruel and Joppan ends up helping her to elope with Thomaskutty. His friends and family believe that Joppan has wedlocked Maria, but when they acknowledges the truth, his desperate mother implores him to attend a retreat. Thus Joppan and his friends steers to a retreat centre. There abruptly, Joppan happens to meet Annie but later discovers that she was with her husband, a physically challenged person. Umpteen jocular moments happen at the retreat centre. After attending Annie's marriage, Joppan furily comes home, but is met with his mother's order for another bride-seeing. Reluctantly Joppan, the broker and his friends goes to the girl's home and learns that the girl is Maria. She reveals that Thomaskutty was a spineless and cowardly Achayan unlike Joppan and has left her in the lurch. In the climax Joppan and Maria yoke together for life.
