We were headed to a promising antique town, but one wrong turn took us to an unexpected barn sale in the backwoods of Key Center, Washington! This is the beauty of freestyle thrifting and antiquing—following the flow and discovering treasures in unexpected places.
The barn sale turned out to be a treasure trove of antique and vintage finds, with everything from 1890s walnut dressers to enamel baking pans, Tonalá pottery, Miller Studio chalk plaques, and rustic washboards. We uncover a surprising costume jewelry piece with a unique label, a Royal Worcester vase with an unusual origin, and plenty of other bargain deals before moving on to explore even more value-priced venues.
In the quaint village of Key Center and nearby Purdy, the thrift stores yield MCM Canadian pottery, Frankoma flame glaze mugs, artist prints, and vintage glass. The annual "Friends of the Library" book sale offers a fresh take on vintage shopping, with collectible books like a Superior Publishing maritime title, a heraldry reference, and an art book on MCM Japanese design—all valuable for collectors and resellers.
The day wraps up with a quick stop at our mall space in Centralia to stock our new finds, followed by visits to local thrift stores open late into the evening. At "The Thrift Center," we spot Alaska Clay pieces, a Morgantown MCM martini pitcher, and a stylish 1970s vintage women’s coat. We also enjoy a vintage car display before ending the day at Goodwill, where more vintage glass, housewares, and bargain books round out our haul.
Sometimes, the best vintage and antique bargain hunting adventures happen when you take a wrong turn!
