Dr Timothy Hildebrandt reflects on his two decades of research on how the Chinese government manages its NGO sector—and how social organisations adapt to the changing political and economic opportunities to do their work. He will also discuss his latest research project in which he and his coauthors use machine learning and big data to do a first-of-its-kind large N study of historical NGO registration in China, revealing how the government balances the risks and benefits of NGOs.
