The Three Types of College Visits
1. Athlete-Led Visits
These are initiated by you and your son. Whether you’re early in the recruiting process or need more traction, visiting schools can be a game-changer. Here’s how to do it:
• Campus Tours: Set up a tour with the admissions department.
• Meet the Coaches: Drop by the baseball coaching office to introduce yourselves.
• Watch Practices: If you visit during practice, observe the team and say hello to the coaches.
2. Unofficial Visits
Invited by the coaching staff but expenses are on you.
• Schedule: Half-day or full-day.
• Activities: Meet the coaching staff, tour the baseball facilities, classrooms, dormitories, and more.
3. Official Visits
The coaching staff covers the expenses.
• Schedule: Could be overnight.
• Activities: Similar to unofficial visits, but more in-depth. Includes meeting the team, potentially staying overnight with a current player.
Questions to Ask on Your Visit
• What’s a day in the life of a student-athlete like?
• How can I make an immediate impact in my position?
• What academic support is available?
• What’s the most popular major among players?
• How do players manage demanding majors like engineering?
Should Parents Attend?
Absolutely! Parents get a feel for the school, meet the coaching staff, and ask crucial questions.
Dress Code
First impressions matter. Wear khakis and a polo shirt. Look presentable but comfortable.
Express Gratitude
Always thank the coaching staff for their time and leave the door open for future opportunities.
