Let's talk about a plant that sometimes get overlooked in the gardening world and why it's such a great addition to your garden. Artichokes will produce several globes, and you can also perennialize them here in zones 9 and 10. It's such an easy plant to grow! Plant once, enjoy for years to come. With that in mind, you want to plant in a place that won't get disturbed. Aside from that, it's pretty low-maintenance. It doesn't require much water, especially once it's established. You can fertilize every now and again if needed, but they're naturally going to do pretty well on their own. The best time to plant is in the fall, but you can go as late as November or December here in zones 9 and 10. Your plant is focused in growing strong in its first year, so you may not get a ton of production out of it. In the following years, though, you might get 8 or 10+ globes per plant. If you do overwinter the plant, you'll start to see the globes forming in the late winter or early spring. We're in May here, and we've already harvested several off this plant over the last month or so. You want to harvest them when they're about the size of a softball at the largest and when the leaves are still tight and not opening up. You really want that tender interior! I also recommend cutting the whole stem down to the main stalk. You won't get more artichokes growing on that stem, and it's just a fun & pretty thing to have in your kitchen! Just a plant or two will give you PLENTY to eat, so we usually let some of of them go to seed. That's going to take a lot of the plant's energy, but they're so pretty.
