Most people have heard of the Titanic disaster. Many know about the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. But few realise that one man connects both events.
Charles Lightoller was the most senior officer to survive the sinking of the Titanic — and nearly three decades later, he returned to the sea in his own small boat to rescue soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk.
This is the extraordinary true story of courage, survival, and quiet heroism.
Commander Charles Lightoller DSC & bar.
Charles Lightoller’s life reads like an adventure novel:Shipwrecked on a desert island…Survivor of the Titanic…Decorated Naval hero in the First World War…Spy… and skippering one of those legendary “Small Ships” at Dunkirk.
Kenneth More famously portrayed him in the 1958 film A Night to Remember. And in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 film Dunkirk, the character Mr. Dawson — played by Mark Rylance — was inspired by Lightoller and Sundowner.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.
History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.
My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"
Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.
