Happy New Year! Let's turn the business of beekeeping around so that beekeepers actually MAKE MORE MONEY than they spend. I made a lot of mistakes when I was first getting started (and still do), but in hindsight, these are the ones that cost me the most time and money.

Top 10 Mistakes I Made Starting My Honey Business:
1) Sold retail instead of wholesale.
2) Didn't sell at markets or festivals.
3) Made a Wordpress website instead of a Shopify site.
4) Used paper labels.
5) Used mason jars.
6) Didn't ask friends and family for help.
7) Sold honey by the individual jar instead of 3 packs or gift sets.
8) Didn't have big sales (Flash Sales or 30% off)
9) Didn't have an email newsletter to start.
10) Spent more time perfecting my product & label & less time marketing
Watch the video to hear why these things hurt my business instead of helping it and what to do instead.
Other tips:
• Give people a good story - about your product, how you got into beekeeping, or about the bees
• Give it away for free at first.
• Keep it simple. Don't overly complicate your product, website, marketing, or anything!
• Make sure what you're doing is legal! Check your areas' food laws to see what needs to be on your label, what certification you need, and if you need a certified kitchen. You may be able to sell direct to customer, but not to retail stores, online or out of state without a certified kitchen or other requirements.
