The word "Thaipusam" is a combination of two words, Thai + Pusam. Thai is the name of the month and Pusam is the name of a star. The Pusam star attains its apogee position during this festival. It is said that during this period Parvati handed over Murugan a Vel (spear) to defeat Soorapadman, a ferocious demon. Among the two schools of thought, one believes that Thaipusam is celebrated as Murugan's birthday, while the other is of the view that Murugan's birthday falls in the month of Vaikhasi (May/June).
