President Donald Trump declared “America is back” as he unleashed an unapologetic defense of his second administration’s opening weeks and promises of more to come in a joint address to a deeply divided Congress in his “unrelenting” makeover of the federal government. Trump’s prime-time address covered a wide range of topics as he moves to implement a sprawling agenda touching on the economy, immigration foreign policy and beyond as he laid out his vision for America’s future with promises for success that have not yet been seen. He vowed to keep delivering on sweeping changes to the government and broader country and said touted the breakneck start his second administration has gotten off to with a flurry of executive orders that he says are saving the country from the failures of the Biden administration. Trump has been emboldened since his win in the November elections that included a clean sweep of the seven swing states and a popular vote victory that he has claimed is an electoral mandate to steer the country in a new direction. Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, was removed from the chamber by the House sergeant at arms at the direction of House Speaker Mike Johnson after repeatedly yelling at Trump that he didn’t have an electoral mandate as the president tried to tout his election win. As Green was removed from the chamber, Republicans cheered with a chant of “USA! USA! USA!” Other Democrats took a more low-key approach, protesting by skipping the speech altogether or walking out as it was still going. Some held up signs silently rebutting the president’s talking points and highlighting issues they hope could help them win back the majority. Democrats have limited power in the minority of the House and Senate to object to Trump and GOP policies and are facing pressure from their voters to do more to stand up to him and persuade people to vote against Republicans during the 2026 midterms.
