What does countryside Japan look like? Well, here is an introduction to my small town.
“You must live in the middle of nowhere”.
A very common response within the comments of my original video about buying a $6,000 house in Japan. But it turns out, I have everything I need to live a comfortable life right on my doorstep.
Everything in the video is within 10 minutes walk from my place. With the exception of the large grocery store and the DIY store which is about 5-10 minutes drive. There is another grocery store located next to the train station which is about 15 minutes walk away that I forgot to show.
With consideration to privacy, I didn’t talk much about my neighbors and how great they have been. I appreciate their help and the friendships I have developed.
One thing that is brought up a lot about Japan in general is not being able to make friends or the difficulty with that. It’s a two way street in my opinion. It takes effort to make new friends anywhere you go. Japan has not been any different for me compared to other places I’ve lived.
Speaking of which, I was just thinking today how much more convenient my life is here in “the middle of nowhere” compared to when I’ve lived in Sydney, Seattle, and California. I don’t need to jump on my car here to reach the things I need and everything is walkable.
Tokyo is 2.5 hours by train. I know people in San Francisco who commute to work 2 hours each way.
Open google maps and compare the size of Japan to the US or Australia and you’ll start to realise it’s difficult to be in the middle of nowhere in most occupied areas of Japan.
Hope you enjoy my tour and please let me know if there’s anything specific you’re interested to learn more about :)
