In his 1862 book, "Thirteen Months in the Rebel Army," William G. Stevenson tells the story of how he traveled from his home in New York City in 1861 to the South. Unaccustomed to the ways of culture, and viewed as a suspicious character, he found himself on the wrong side of locals who took the law into their own hands. Here's the story.
