TW: Some graphic descriptions of the reality of the Slave Trade
Gambia was one of my favourite trips so far! I am disappointed my Monday trip with my sister was cancelled however this gave me more time to spend chilling on the beach with my family.
This was my first time in Africa and I was happy to visit the motherland and explore some of its culture and history. Although the history of slavery is an intense topic to learn about on holiday, it felt healing to learn about how the Transatlantic Slave Trade affected Gambia and Senegal. Before I lost my uncle, one of my last memories of conversations with him was him gifting me the old cassette tapes of the 'Roots' series and urging me to watch it. I could never finish the original Roots show, watching some of it during my first year of undergraduate after my uncle passed. I did finish the reboot but should pick up the old show to honour that promise.
I spent my final night drinking at the bar befriending the bartenders. One of them messaged me to wish me a safe flight which was really nice. It seems that if I return to Gambia, there are a few people who would be interested in a reunion!
Being a human rights geek, I am quite curious about doing some work in Gambia for my next visit. The reality of economic inequity were of interest to me, despite my holiday demeanour. The hotel had a book titled 'Citizenship Law in Africa' that I decided to read by the poolside.
