Markhors, as representatives of the mountain goat family, are perfectly adapted to life at altitude. They move along the most inaccessible cliffs with exceptional speed and agility. The goats are able to confidently stand on a virtually vertical wall thanks to the special structure of their hooves. Their narrow, forked, hard-contoured hooves have a soft pad in the center that collapses inward when walking, allowing the animal to cling to protrusions with the hard part of the hoof. Their unique horns, twisting like a corkscrew, reach a length of one and a half meters or more. These amazing animals live at altitudes from 500 to 3,500 meters. Markhor hunting is difficult. Its success depends on the physical condition of the hunter, as it is carried out at an altitude of 800 to 3,000 m above sea level. The relief in the habitats of markhor is very complex. Today, the Tajik population has many trophy males aged 7 years and older. The annual quota for harvesting this species is 12 to 15 heads per year. The license costs a lot of money, the lion's share of which goes to protecting the population.

The story of the Bukhara Markhor in Tajikistan is another example of how trophy hunters are preserving nature. After the economic crisis and civil war, the markhor population fell drastically. Illegal hunting of wild animals was then carried out for food. Up until 2008, the population did not exceed 350 individuals. In 2010, international conservation organizations presented the government of Tajikistan with a program for the reproduction of markhor, which had previously been successfully implemented in Pakistan. Local communities became the main beneficiaries. The program was adopted in 2011, and the first hunt brought local residents more than 100,000 euros per trophy. The money went to support rural communities. It was no longer profitable for local hunters to hunt rare animals for food. People stood up to protect the animals. Poaching came to an end. The number of markhor has grown rapidly. By 2019, almost 3,000 Bukhara markhor had been recorded. The number of annual markhor licenses increased from 6 in 2013 to 15 in 2022. Thus, trophy hunting saved the unique species from complete extinction.
