𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗗𝗬: Truck Destroys Ficus Tree in Santa Monica, Forces Street Closure and On-Site Shredding

SANTA MONICA, CA — May 27, 2025 — A delivery truck from Alta Dena Dairy collided with a large Ficus tree along Fifth Street near Colorado Avenue on Tuesday, triggering a dramatic midday cleanup operation and a temporary southbound lane closure. The incident occurred as the truck began pulling away from a parked position. The driver failed to see a large overhanging limb, which struck the vehicle and shattered the front windshield. The force of the impact caused multiple branches to collapse across the cab and hood, trapping the truck beneath heavy debris. Images from the scene show crews from United Pacific Services—contracted by the City of Santa Monica—responding swiftly. Workers used a bucket lift and chainsaws to cut away massive limbs, while a wood chipper parked nearby processed the felled tree directly on site. Debris was scattered across the sidewalk and roadway, prompting officials to close the southbound lane of Fifth Street between Broadway and Colorado Avenue for safety. A Santa Monica Community Service Officer was first on scene and coordinated the emergency response. No injuries were reported. Following the removal of the tree, a tow truck was dispatched to haul away the damaged Alta Dena vehicle. Normal traffic resumed shortly afterward.
