President Donald Trump has said one goal of his second presidency is to shrink the federal workforce. The Trump administration on Jan. 28, 2025, offered federal employees with a deferred resignation program that would allow employees to resign by Feb. 6 and still receive paychecks through through Sept. 30.
Since then, the Office of Personnel Management said about 75,000 federal workers have accepted the deferred buyout program.
