Trump Didn’t See This Coming: Canada to Blocking US Free Access to Alaska: A Bluff or Tactic?
President Trump has just announced a one-month delay on the 25% tariffs originally set to hit Canadian imports. Instead of kicking in immediately, they’ll now take effect on April 2nd. The decision followed high-stakes talks with Canadian officials and mounting concerns from industries on both sides of the border. Businesses that rely on U.S.-Canada trade were quick to warn that these tariffs would hit everything from manufacturing to agriculture, potentially leading to job losses and price hikes for consumers.
In response to Trump’s move, Canada has also hit the brakes on its second wave of retaliatory tariffs, which were initially planned to target $125 billion worth of U.S. goods. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc confirmed that Canada would now wait until April 7th before implementing those measures. But make no mistake—Canada’s first round of tariffs, covering $30 billion worth of U.S. products, remains in place.
