U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday (February 7) said he was 'very proud' of the work that DOGE was doing, adding that he picks 'out a target and I say go in' to DOGE staffers.
Members of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency have started working at the U.S. Energy Department where officials are concerned that they could get access to personnel files and information about disbursement of federal grants, two sources said on Friday.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who was confirmed this week by the Senate, told CNBC on Friday that three DOGE members are at the department and "have access to look around, talk to people and give us some good feedback on how things are going."
Wright said they are "friends in Elon's broader circle."
Wright said the DOGE members do not have security clearances and are not looking at nuclear weapons secrets. The department's National Nuclear Security Administration is in charge of maintaining the U.S. nuclear weapons complex and labs.
Additionally, one of the people working with billionaire Elon Musk in his efforts to overhaul the U.S. government is a Berkeley-educated computer scientist who has boosted white supremacists and misogynists online.
Gavin Kliger lists his job on LinkedIn as "Special Advisor to the Director" at the Office of Personnel Management, which has been spearheading Musk's efforts to shrink the federal workforce. His USAID email address was copied on a message reviewed by Reuters that was sent to staffers at the international aid agency on Monday. It urged them to stay home while the agency was being shut down.
Kliger is one of about a dozen men identified by Reuters and other news outlets who have been recruited by Musk and his DOGE office to reshape the federal government. Reuters could not determine the importance of Kliger’s role at OPM.
