My 2023 Yatra to Tungnath Temple in Uttarakhand was a divine experience. Tungnath-Chandrashila trek is very famous among tourist. Not only beginners but even experienced trekkers like this trek very much. This was my 2nd visit to Tungnath. I visited this temple first in 2022. That time I couldn't go to Chandrashila. Tungnath Mahadev Temple is one of the Panch Kedar in Uttarakhand. Panch Kedar is a group of five Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The other 4 temples of Panch Kedar are : Kedarnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar & Kalpeshwar Temple.
Tungnath temple is located at an altitude of 3,680 meters which makes it the highest Shiva temple in the world. There is a 4 km trek from Chopta to Tungnath Temple. You can do this trek in 3 hours even if you don't have much trekking experience. Tungnath receives thousands of devotees every month. There is a fascinating story behind Tungnath temple which I have narrated in the video. This temple remains open for just 6 months but devotees & trekkers do visit it throughout the year.
After visiting Tungnath I went to Chandrashila summit. The weather was getting cloudy & I wanted to capture the entire Himalayan ranges before cloud covering them. So I didn't spend much time at Tungnath. My plan was first go to Chandrashila then come back & stay at Tungnath. Chandrashila top is 1 km from Tungnath Temple. The trek is little steep but one can reach there easily as it has well paved path. I reached Tungnath summit around 10am. There is a small temple at the top of Chandrashila. This temple is dedicated to Maa Ganga. I was quite impressed with the ranges that are seen from Chandrashila. From Gangotri 1,2 ,3 to Trishul 1, 2, 3, Kedarnath peak to Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba to Hathi & Gauri Parvat, you can see 360 degree of Himalayan ranges from here.
Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek Tips :
- start your trekking early in the morning if you want to experience divine sunrise
- if you're also planning to visit Chandrashila, then first go to Chandrashila because the views will be less enchanting once clouds cover the Himalayan peaks
- carry water & food with you from Chopta if you are visiting in off season. You will not find anything at Tungnath
- follow the rules & guidance of temple
- bring back your plastic bottle & other items from Chandrashila & Tungnath as these are environmentally very sensitive places
