The two notes you must add to your blues rock scales for killer phrasing are the major third and the blues note. Try taking an A minor pentatonic shape position 1 and imagine adding the major third of the 1 chord to inside of it (sixth fret G string). Now apply that note to all of your minor pentatonic shapes. Keep in mind it doesn't apply to strictly minor progressions but it will totally work in major progressions and progressions that contain mostly root and fifth chords (most hard rock songs). If you take those same A minor pentatonic scales, position 1 for an example, the blues note would be the 8th fret of the G string. This note will actually work in a strictly minor progressions. I use this all of the time. It is actually kind of addicting. The combination of these two notes will blow your mind!! Think of them as the gateway drug to mixing major and minor pentatonic scales. Not only will this give you potentially hundreds of more phrasing ideas but they will totally make your blues rock soloing way more interesting. Give it a shot!
