In this video we visit Metford, a station on the Main North Line in the Maitland suburb of Metford. We visit the station while waiting for the ARTC Great Train Race; the main event of the 2024 Hunter Valley Steamfest. This year saw steam locomotives 3526 and 6029 Beyer-Garratt race one another from Waratah to Maitland. We see these two steam locomotive pass through the station on the way to begin the race with the assistance of diesel locomotive 4201 & 4501, before seeing the two trains race side-by-side!
While waiting for the race we see pretty much everything else that passed through in the meantime. This includes NSW Trainlink Endeavour and Hunter railcars on Hunter Line services between Newcastle and Maitland. We also see numerous freight trains including lengthy Aurizon and Pacific National coal trains, plus a Pacific National intermodal heading south and a QUBE steel train heading north.
