In it’s biggest sustained increase since the end of the Cold War, the United Kingdom is set to increase its defence spending amount to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2027, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Tuesday in the House of Commons.
“Let me spell that out. That means spending £13.4 billion more on defence every year from 2027,” the Labour Party member told the house speaker.
Not only that, but Starmer aims to target a 3 per cent spend in the long-term by making cuts to its overseas development budget from 0.5% of GNI to 0.3% in 2027. Despite this, Starmer said the UK will “continue to play a key humanitarian role in Sudan, in Ukraine, and in Gaza, tackling climate change, supporting multinational efforts on global health, and challenges like vaccinations."
The decision comes after U.S. President Donald Trump demanded European countries to provide their own security. Since then, Starmer and other European leaders have stepped up diplomatic efforts to show a united front to support Ukraine as it enters its fourth year of war with Russia.
