Strikes at ranges greater than 60 km by HIMARS installations are highly dependent on intelligence data. Recently, journalists from The Washington Post reported that some Ukrainian batteries armed with HIMARS are no longer receiving coordinates when they want to strike targets located at a distance greater than 60 km, Forbes reports. Washington cut off a key intelligence channel. Ukraine no longer receives real-time information to launch long-range strikes against the enemy.
HIMARS, like other artillery systems, just needs map grid coordinates—manually calculated or aided by GPS—to accurately strike a target. Those coordinates can come from any intelligence source: a satellite, a drone, radio eavesdropping or even a human spotter with a pair of binoculars.
Which is why, around the same time the Americans began blocking intel, a Ukrainian HIMARS blasted a concentration of Russian troops around Pokrovsk, a Ukrainian-held fortress city in eastern Ukraine. The nearest Russian regiments are just a few miles from Pokrovsk, well within reach of even smaller drones.
Experts say Ukraine continues to receive information from its own or European intelligence, but the information from the United States has been clearer . On the one hand, Ukraine can solve this problem thanks to Europe. Many in the EU have the same space capabilities as the US, but on a smaller scale. At the same time, we should not forget about the existence of commercial providers of such services. All that is required is to pay them money for the information provided. Until Trump changes his anti-Ukrainian policy, the Ukrainian Armed Forces can fire at the enemy from HIMARS, but not from as far away or accurately. But they can still fire. At least until their rockets, most of which have been donated by the US, run out.
Recent estimates suggest only 20% of total military hardware supplied to Ukrainian forces is now from the US — 55% is Ukrainian-produced and 25% is from Europe and the rest of the world, Malcolm Chalmers, RUSI's Deputy Director-General, said. But he called that 20% "the most lethal and important."
"Ukraine will not collapse — they already experienced an aid cutoff last year, but the effect will be cumulative," he added.
Ukraine is also set to receive more arms this year directly from US manufacturers that were approved during the Biden administration, and it's unclear if President Donald Trump's administration will attempt to block them.
