I've been a committed subscriber to Artie Shell of @MasconLeather YouTube channel because he is a fascinating craftsman. It's a lot of fun to watch him document the manufacture of his wallets in his distinctive style. Recently, during dinner on a Friday, a buddy of mine who had an Artie wallet showed me one of his creations. It was also magnificent. I am aware that there are many skilled artisans out there, and leatherwork is an infinite sea if one needs to get into the details. Meeting one of his masterpieces, nevertheless, helped me realize that a bully, handsome wallet with flaps that are half an inch thick and made of heavy hide has an atmosphere that screams "I am here."
For the past 40 years, consumer expectations have been shaped by luxury brand designer houses' unwillingness to invest in high-quality leather materials, willingness to use less leather and solid metals, and more plastic, cardboard, and fake leather in their creations, along with aggressive marketing tactics. This resulted in the embarrassment of being too heavy, too huge, and too thick for individual leather-crafting artisans who use solid and unbreakable materials
The interest is slowly changing towards the positive side, though, thanks to artists like Artie, Tanner Claridge, Parker Lichfield, Ryan Savin, and dozens who share their work on social media.
