We may think of am Uncle Tom as 'a Black person who is overeager to win the approval of whites.'
However, when Harriet Beecher Stowe published her 1852 abolitionist novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, she made Uncle Tom a martyr; sacrificial. He wasnt weak or docile. He was a "broad-chested, strong armed fellow" as she put it.
