Con Son Pagoda (literal name is Tu Phuc Tu or Con Son Tu), also known as Hun Pagoda, is a temple located on Con Son mountain (also known as Hun mountain) in Cong Hoa ward, Chi Linh city. Hai Duong province, Vietnam.
The pagoda is located at the foot of Con Son mountain. Legend has it that this is the place where a fire attack took place to create smoke to capture Pham Bach Ho during the chaos of 12 warlords of Dinh Bo Linh in the 10th century. Therefore, in addition to the name Con Son, the mountain is also known as Ky Lan or Ky Lan. Hun mountain.
In the 12th Hung Long year (1304), the monk Phap Loa built a small pagoda called Ky Lan. In the first year of Khai Huu (1329), the pagoda was built and expanded into Con Son Thien Tu Phuc Tu, assigned to Huyen Quang to preside over. Right from the Tran Dynasty, Con Son Pagoda was one of the three centers of Truc Lam Zen sect along with Yen Tu and Quynh Lam, Quang Ninh.
The pagoda is the place of practice of National Master Huyen Quang - the third patriarch of Truc Lam Zen sect. After Huyen Quang's death, King Tran Minh Tong built Dang Minh stupa containing his relics and since then, Huyen Quang's death day has gradually become the Con Son Spring Festival.
In the Le So dynasty, the pagoda was the place where Nguyen Trai retreated to hide in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather, Tran Nguyen Dan, who also returned to Con Son to escape at the end of the Tran dynasty. In 1439, King Le Thai Tong restored the titles to Nguyen Trai, in which he had a title of Nominate Con Son Tu Phuc, ie "Manager of Tu Phuc Pagoda" (Con Son Pagoda).
During the Le Trung Hung period, during the period when Zen Master Mai Tri Ban Phap Nhan was abbot, the pagoda was restored and expanded to a massive scale. According to the stele carved in the 15th year of Hoang Dinh (1614), at that time the pagoda had 83 compartments, including works such as: the three gates, the nine-level lotus building with 385 Buddha statues, the incense burning house, the front hall, and the upper hall. , left and right corridor, carved new statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara with thousand eyes and thousand hands, 18 painted Buddha statues on the upper hall, re-gilded three statues of three worlds... After many years of war and destruction, Con Son pagoda is only left The scale is moderate but the architecture is still in harmony with the landscape.
In 1334, Huyen Quang passed away at Con Son pagoda, King Tran Minh Tong donated 10 taels of gold to build a burial tower for Zen master, named Dang Minh Bao Thap. Over time the tower was ruined. In 1719, the monk Hai An rebuilt the tower
Dang Minh Tower is located at the foot of Ky Lan Mountain behind Con Son Pagoda. The courtyard of the Bat Trang brick tower is 8.75m long, 7.8m wide, surrounded by solid bricks of the Le Dynasty. The tower is built of Kinh Chu green stone, each plate is 1 x 0.7m on average, 10–15 cm thick. The tower is 3 floors high, the pedestal is shaped like a lotus flower. The tower opens a door facing south on the first floor, 48 cm wide and 81 cm high. The second floor above has a brick sign with four letters 燈明寶塔 (Dang Minh stupa). At the top is the top of the tower where the nectar vase is placed. It is worth noting that the back and left side of the first floor of the tower has a stele that talks about the career background of Truc Lam III, Huyen Quang. The stele is directly engraved on the grafted stone of the tower, measuring 0.70 x 0.50m, without decorative patterns. This is a precious stele that elucidates many things of the Truc Lam Zen sect. The date of the stele engraving is also the date of the construction of Dang Minh tower, the 15th year of Vinh Thinh (1719).
The content of the epitaph provides many valuable materials. The inscription says that Huyen Quang Ton Gia, the third patriarch of the Truc Lam Zen sect, was born in Van Tu (Van Tai) Gia Dinh, now Gia Binh district, Bac Ninh. Before he left home, Ly Dao Tai passed the Poinsettia Tam Dao exam, served as a missionary to China, and was highly appreciated. Then he ordained as a Buddhist monk. At the age of 80, King Tran Minh Tong respected the title and built the tower right after Huyen Quang passed away.
This is a place that witnessed a life and tragedy of the national hero, cultural celebrity Nguyen Trai. He was born here and after years of participating in the government, Nguyen Trai returned to Con Son and lived a reclusive life. Canh Con Son has inspired Nguyen Trai to compose a number of poems in Nom script in Quoc Am's poetry collection such as "Quy Con Son contemporaneous improvisation", as well as poems in Chinese characters: Mong Son Trung, Con Son Sen. author, Quy Con Son Chu zhu zhu zhu dan, qifu dan painting Con Son map, the most famous of which is the song Con Son Ca.
