One day Gautama Buddha came for a discourse and he had a rope in his hands. This was unusual. The devotees had never seen something like that before. A moment later he started tying the knots in the rope. He put three knots on the rope. He lifted the rope and asked his disciples if this rope is the same rope as it was before the knots were tied. Is it the same rope or a different one? Everyone thought for a while and everybody gave different answers. One of the disciples said that it is the same rope although it no longer looks the same rope because it has three knots on it. Then Buddha started pulling at both ends of the rope and said that if he pulls the rope, will he untie the knots? Everybody knew the answer right away. They all said that you cannot untie the knot. Infact, they will be more tightened and won’t open if you pull the rope.
Buddha said that this is all that he wanted the disciples to know; that you cannot untie the knots if you pull them. You cannot open the knots by pulling at the knots. You have to examine the knots to understand why the knot was tied in the first place. You cannot solve old problems with the old mind. You cannot solve problems with the same mind that created them in the first place.
