This video is an update from my review of the Digitrax Zephyr Express DCC starter set uploaded on January 31, 2019. In that video, I was not able to get the DCS52 (Zephyr) to connect to the JMRI on my computer using a USB adapter. Ultimately, I was not successful when I was producing that video and did not have time to troubleshoot.
In the meantime, I posted my connectivity issues on the Digitrax user site: https://groups.io/g/Digitrax-Users/topics Reading some of the posts from other members, I learned that the DCS52 had an issue when they shipped it where F9 was not working properly. In my initial video, I found it odd that I could not get F9 to work, so I edited that out of the video. I assumed it was a decoder issue and I didn't have time to try out a second locomotive with a different decoder. Come to find out, Digitrax released a firmware update for the DCS52 to correct that issue.
Moving forward, I am confident that any new DCS52s will come shipped with the firmware updated; however, anyone getting them from the first run that have already shipped, this will be an issue you have to navigate through.
The nice thing is, with the built in USB port on the DCS52, it was very easy to do a firmware update. I have included that in this video. I want to stress, this video is for entertainment only. The firmware update worked for me using the method I describe. I am not in any way or form accountable if you try to update the firmware on your device using my techniques. Now that these two issues are resolved, I can legitimately say that the Digitrax Zephry Express is an outstanding DCC starter set and I am very excited to get to work on my demonstration layout!
