Upperton - Maidstone & Mid Kent Model Railway Exhibition 2024 Upperton by Eastbourne Model Railway Society, a N Gauge layout Featured at the Maidstone & Mid-Kent Model Railway Exhibition 28 December 2024 Upperton (22’ x 3’ British DC N Gauge) by Eastbourne Model Railway Society. Upperton is a fictitious station set in the 1960s located south-west of Salisbury on the mainline to Exeter and Devon, carrying through traffic from the North, East and South of England to West Country resorts. This gives a good opportunity for locomotives and rolling stock of all regions to be run on the layout. While the layout is not run to a timetable, operating practices of the full size railway are followed as closely as possible, though our main operating aim is to entertain while displaying a wide range rolling stock from the era. All trackwork is PECO finescale Code 55 with SEEP point motors (the majority of them are over 30 years old and still giving reliable service). Train control is DC via Guagemaster hand-held units, using the tried and tested control cab method. Embankments and part of Upperton Golf Course are made from polystyrene offcuts or wire mesh shaped and covered with a thin layer of plaster. The scenic areas have been refreshed with static grass and the trees supplied by themodeltreeshop.co.uk. Buildings are predominantly off the shelf items, the only original scratch built building that's survives is the undertakers ‘Rigor & Mortis’ on far left hand-side of the layout. Upperton was originally built by the Eastbourne Model Railway Society in the late 1980's and regularly exhibited until 2012 when the 4 central layout boards were stolen from our club room that year. By sheer chance, 3 of the 4 missing boards were recovered thanks to a lucky spot from Sebastian of Train Times model shop in Eastbourne during the summer of 2017. With the bulk of the layout recovered, though in very poor state, it was decided to restore Upperton and bring it back to the condition you see today.
