Pete Hegseth, the US secretary of defence, greeted John Healey, the British defence minister, with a guard of honour as he arrived at the Pentagon in Washington for bilateral talks.
The two men shook hands and patted each other on the back before a military brass band played the UK and US national anthems.
The meeting is expected to focus on securing a potential peace plan in the Ukraine-Russia war, along with efforts to bridge a growing transatlantic rift.
Healey said the two countries were “pulling together here, and we’re working hard on a path to peace”
