A Washington DC judge ruled against blocking Elon Musk’s DOGE from firing federal employees or accessing sensitive records. The lawsuit, filed by 14 Democratic attorneys general, argues Musk lacks legal authority to direct federal job cuts or access records. DOGE, led by Musk, has cut thousands of jobs and dismantled programs since Trump took office in January. Attorneys General argue Musk’s power mirrors that of a Govt officer confirmed by US Senate under the Appointments Clause. The judge acknowledged concerns about Musk’s unchecked authority and DOGE's lack of congressional oversight. Despite these concerns, the judge said the states hadn’t proven they were entitled to an immediate restraining order. The judge could rule in favour of the states later but noted their request for an emergency order was too broad and speculative. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency is central to a political and legal battle over federal employee firings. The Democratic-led lawsuit challenges the legality of DOGE’s mass firings and access to sensitive government data. States argue DOGE’s actions violate the constitutional requirement for Govt officials to be nominated and confirmed by the Senate. The judge’s decision leaves room for future rulings but denies the immediate legal action sought by the states.
