In 1972, I learned 3-wall outdoor handball in p.e. class at Hilltop Junior High in Chula Vista, a suburb of San Diego. Eventually, I switched to a short-handled wooden racquet to save my hands from callouses. I thought I'd invented the game until I was challenged to play at Southwestern College. There I met my future husband Ernie Charfauros who invited me to Mel Gorham's Club in Pacific Beach. On that first date I watched in amazement as Charlie Brumfield, his girlfriend Jan, Steve Strandemo, Craig McCoy and a handful of other pros were practicing and sparring on the courts. Wow! I was hooked. Although I never became better than semi-pro as a player, I worked as a writer/photographer (thanks to Art Shay) for National Racquetball, Racquetball Illustrated, Women's Sports, etc. I invited Steve Keeley to join me on a 5-1/2 month teaching tour of Latin American in 1983, from Honduras to Bolivia, including Costa Rica, US military in Panama, etc. I taught RBall at UCSC for 35 years.
