Lisburn Young Defenders Flute Band is comprised mainly of members from the local area, although we also have members from as far afield as Portadown and Ballymena. The band currently play wooden flutes, using E Flat Piccolo, B Flat, F, and Bb bass flutes. "LYD" is primarily a marching band but also takes part in various Indoor Contests. We have been Melody Flute Champions of Ireland, in the years 2000, 2001 and 2003. This achievement is a long way from the musical ability of the band at the time of its formation in 1970. The band was originally formed under the name of "Moira Road Protestant Boys", however, shortly after this, as female members wanted to join, the Protestant Boys part of the title was replaced with "Young Defenders". In May 1971 the band amalgamated with the Sam Anderson Memorial Flute Band and the name was changed once again, this time to "Young Defenders Lisburn Flute Band".
