Spellers The Movie, a Spellers Freedom Foundation film, challenges conventional wisdom regarding a group relegated to society’s margins: nonspeakers with autism, whom most “experts” believe are cognitively disabled. Based on the overwhelming response to our book, UNDERESTIMATED, we made this documentary to show and share with the world the joy of seeing these nonspeakers communicate in their own words through spelling. Spellers awakens teachers, schools, therapists, and society at large to the reality that we may have underestimated the abilities of millions of people worldwide. Our film is a heartfelt and authentic story of perseverance and a call to challenge the world’s view of nonspeakers.
