Gealdýr is the musical project of Dutch singer-songwriter Jonathan Barendsma, established in 2019. Known within the Nordic folk scene, Gealdýr blends influences from Norse mythology, Celtic and medieval folklore to create ambient dark folk music. Featuring lyrics in Old Norse, Old English, and other ancient languages, the project captures the essence of historical and mythical stories. The name combines the Gaelic “geal” (white) and Old Norse “dýr” (deer), symbolizing a “white deer.” Gealdýr explores themes of life, legend, and the healing power of music, connecting listeners with the ancient world.
