The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was founded in 1739. It is an independent organisation whose overall objective is to promote the sciences and strengthen their influence in society. The Academy covers mathematics, natural sciences and technology as well as social sciences and humanities and endeavours to increase exchange between different disciplines.

The Academy awards many prizes each year. The most well-known are the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (the Prize in Economic Sciences). Other prestigious prizes include the Crafoord Prize and the Sjöberg Prize.
