Bonneville Flood and the Wasatch Fault

Bonneville Flood and the Wasatch Fault

The cause of the Bonneville Flood continues to be a matter of debate. New evidence suggests that a massive earthquake on the Salt Lake segment of the Wasatch Fault at a time when Pleistocene Lake Bonneville was at its highest level created massive surging and possibly a tsunami in Lake Bonneville. Such a wave event could have overwhelmed the outflow near Red Rock Pass in Idaho.
The core of this new research was presented at the 2020 Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America.
